The EU can introduce reciprocal duties against the U.S.A. in July.
In July, the European Commission is preparing to introduce additional duties on a wide range of products manufactured in the US, including steel. On June 6, the EC approved the introduction of reciprocal duties on products from the US, a list of which was previously transferred to the WTO, the official statement said. The European Union is ready to impose duties ranging from 10% to 50% of various categories of US goods in July, after the completion of appropriate coordination procedures with the member states of the bloc, as Metal Expert has learned. Among other things, the list includes duties of 25% for all types of steel, including pipe products, other than semi-finished products. Additional duties will hit the US export value of EUR2.8 billion, reports Reuters. This decision was made after the introduction in the US of duties on imports of steel and aluminum from the EU, Canada and Mexico in the amount of 10% and 25% respectively from June 1, 2018. According to the EC, US duties will harm the EU's exports, which in 2017 was estimated at EUR6.4 billion. "This is a well-considered and adequate response to the unilateral illegal decision of the United States to impose duties on the export of European steel and aluminum. We regret that the United States has left us no choice but to introduce protective measures in the EU, "said Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström. According to Eurometal, in 2017 steel imports in the EU amounted to 29.4 million tons (not including semi-manufactured products). About 69%, that is 20.3 million tons, was flat rolled.
